Unit 6: Assignment 2 - Task 2, Part 4: Analysis of a computer game design

Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. The game was released worldwide in 2017.


Horizon's building blocks:

The Horizon game engine is Decima being used for gameplay and graphics. The graphics on PS4 are 1080p with 60fps, light reflects, dynamic lighting, dynamic weather, automatic V Sync, Runtime Tessellation, Local reflections, high dynamic range, adaptive exposure, anti-aliasing, depth of field and anisotropic Filtering. The only difference between Horizon performance on PS4 to PS4 Pro is that the PS4 Pro can perform at 4K resolution, 60 fps giving it the ability to show greater amount of details.

The sound was designed and created by Joris de Man who was acting is the Horizon's composer that made songs and soundtrack of the game. Full Original Soundtrack:


The construction of the content is main focusing on the story aspect of the game while being only single player played offline. The game is open-world atmosphere with third person view. The codes used in screen HUD (Heads Up Display) has several different usages:


Equipment allows the player to lay down traps or use some sort of buff or de-buff effect. The ammo count to show how much arrows are left, the weapon selection shows from weapon wheel. The player has functioning health bar at the top but only appears when the player has taken damage to indicate how much health is remaining.

How and Why?

As an infant, Aloy is put under the care of the outcast Rost by the Nora Matriarchs. Due to the mysterious circumstances of her birth, as well as her status as an outcast, Aloy is often persecuted and shunned by the rest of the Nora tribe. As a child, she accidentally falls into an ancient bunker built by the Old Ones, and takes possession of a Focus, a small device that gives her special perceptive abilities as well as the ability to interact with machines and Old One technology. Later, she becomes curious about the identity of her mother and decides on winning a competition called the Proving so she can win the right to ask the Matriarchs directly.

Where, When and What?

The game is set about one thousand years in the future in a world where humans have regressed to primitive tribal societies as a result of some unknown calamity that destroyed human civilisation. Their technologically advanced predecessors are vaguely remembered as the “Old Ones”. Large robotic creatures known simply as “machines” now dominate the Earth. For the most part they peacefully coexist with humans, who occasionally hunt them for parts. However, a recent phenomenon known as the “Derangement” has caused machines to become more aggressive towards humans, and larger and deadlier machines have begun to appear.

There are three tribes that feature prominently in the game: the Nora, the Carja, and the Oseram. The Nora are fierce hunter-gatherers who live in the mountains and worship nature as the “All-Mother.” The Carja are desert-dwelling city builders who worship the Sun. The Oseram are tinkerers known for their metalworking, brewing, and arguing; they also serve as mercenaries.

My though's on the story:

I have not complete the game yet. But I am enjoy playing the game mostly because of stealth mechanics and good combat to story telling. The story starts of with main character Aloy, a hunter raised as an outcast. She wanted to know who mother is but as the Horizon's story started at beginning focusing on Aloy but as I progressed through the story it expanded more into the Horizon's lore and background information.

Representation of Character:

The main character is a female called "Aloy" her appearance is a white skin, ember eyes, red hair and slim figure.
My Positive View on Aloy (Main Character):

Aloy character is based on that fact she was outcast for most of her life and did not have much people to interact with. Because of this she usually talks to herself in trying to motivate her to do something. Her personality is somewhat snarky and arrogant but can be sincere during personal discussions with other characters ingame.

Other characters:
They are also diverse sets of characters of different ethnicities. Which made them stand out and more easier to remember and I can across them again. Each character had also some unique personality like a "quark" that makes them memorable characters.
