What are concept arts use for?

Concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books or other media before it is put into the final product. Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design. 

Concept Art i used in many media industry to plant out stories to design characters/environment/objects. It s most commonly founded in cartoon/anime, games and in some TV shows.

Process of Concept Art:

Concept art is developed and design to achieve the desired result, or sometimes tried to imitate the result they want for work they're doing. Concept art are used for to show progress and idea towards the directors, investors and clients they are working for. Once the development of concept is complete for the media they are working. The end product should look same as the concept art the beginning. Sometimes it can be completely different to the product because of the limitation of technology, money or time to producing it.


Character Concept Art

Concept art have embraced part of technology. Having pads that replicates same movement on the computer. The digital art tech can be from pad that can be drawn on. raster graphic tablet for digital painting have became more easily implemented, enabling them to be more effective and efficient at their work.

Concept art ranges from the stylised to the photo-realistic. This is facilitated by the use of special software by which an artist is able to fill in even small details pixel by pixel, or utilise the natural paint settings to imitate real paint. When commissioning work, a company will often require a large amount of preliminary work to be produced. Artists working on a project often produce a large turnover in the early stages to provide a broad range of interpretations, most of this being in the form of sketches, speed paints, and 3D overprints. Later pieces of concept art, like matte paintings, are produced as realistically as required. Concept artists will sometimes have to adapt to the style of the studio they are hired for. Most concept artists can do multiple styles.

There are many concept art generalists, but there are also many specialised concept artists. The various specialisations are: Character Design, Creature Design, Environment Design, and Industrial Design. Many concept artists have more than one specialisation or are specialised in one thing and know the basics of the others. Specialisation is regarded as better for freelancers than concept artists who want to work In-House since they are usually required to know how to do everything. For freelance concept artists specialisation can lead you to being hired based on your specialisation. Knowing the foundations of art such as anatomy, perspective, colour theory, design, and lighting should never be disregarded since they are the bread and butter of a concept artist.

When creating a concept art it need to show what the mood is, the style and what happened or is happening. By doing this it would make it easier in later development to make the level, cinematic and character's personality.

Warframe, Corpus Level Concept
This is a concept art from a game called Warframe. This is piece concept art is from faction called Corpus in Jupiter tileeset. The design of the concept is showing this level is a factory. The design of the map is cut and clean, with no round curves but just edge like style design. The atmosphere of the level is calm and loud, as it seems to be a production area. The colour scheme is following more simplistic style with neutral colours like black, grey, white and silver as its main colour pallet.
